Hello Geeks, This tutorial will show you how to upgrade from Ubuntu 20.04 LTS to 22.04 LTS (Jammy Jellyfish). Ubuntu 22.04 LTS comes bundled with new features and fixes of bugs that were present in the previous releases. Ubuntu 22.04 also has excellent performance improvements, the latest security updates, and a dark mode layout since it utilizes the GNOME 42 desktop environment.

Other features include Apache 2.5.52, Django 3.2.12, LibreOffice 7.3, Linux kernel v5.15.0-25, MySQL 8.0.28, PHP 8.1.2, and Python 3.10.4, among other features.

Steps to Upgrade from Ubuntu 20.04 LTS to Ubuntu 22.04 LTS

NOTE: Ensure you take the back up of your files before starting the upgrade process.

  • First, ensure your Ubuntu Linux system is updated. This will help to ensure that the difference between packages is as small as possible. Run the following commands:
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade
sudo apt dist-upgrade
sudo apt autoremove
  • Install the update-manager-core package with apt and the Ubuntu upgrade utility using the following commands
sudo apt install update-manager-core
sudo do-release-upgrade
  • You will be prompted whether you want to upgrade, type y to proceed, and press enter to begin the upgrade to Ubuntu 22.04 Jammy Jellyfish.
  • The upgrade progress and summary will display in your terminal. Again you will be prompted to confirm. Type y and click enter to confirm the upgrade.
  • When the system finishes the upgrade process, you will be required to restart your computer and one Ubuntu boots up again, the upgrade will be complete.
